Savor Your Surroundings
The world changes fast
Blink and miss its fair wonder
Savor it forever
I’m staring at a clear blue sky as I type this. I can hear the sound of excited children as the wind blows past them and makes the leaves dance. Taylor Swift’s music plays in the background to get in the writer’s headspace. Thanks to my dad’s decor skills, the balcony is my retreat for creativity on this blissful Spring evening. I’m savoring the moment.
That brings us to the happiness habit of the week, which is to savor your surroundings. However, what does it mean to savor your surroundings?
Savoring your surroundings is the act of living in the moment while appreciating it. For example, when you buy an ice cream, you enjoy it one lick at a time to savor the flavor, right? I can’t see why you would want to eat an ice cream in one bite unless you like brain freeze. The moment you’re living is like that ice cream. You’re meant to immerse yourself in its richness and let it carry you away.
To highlight the power of savoring, a study from 2021 in Hong Kong found that the act of savoring helped individuals cope with the stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
You can exercise this happiness habit in many scenarios. Whether it means spending time with family or enjoying a good meal, savoring can be practiced anywhere, at any time. Perhaps you’ve savored an experience before and didn’t realize but make it a habit. Savoring enhances the moment in a conscious way that you’re unlikely to forget because it makes you happy, which is the point of all this.
With that said, savoring requires little effort, and you don’t need money for it. Train your mind to savor life so every day will be an experience. Good luck!
