Exit Your Comfort Zone
Earlier this week, I felt my heart almost burst out of my chest. Our plane was ascending, and my excitement gradually got replaced by anxiety. I was about to f**king skydive. I anticipated this, so I calmed myself during takeoff with deep breaths. It worked, kind of. Regardless of how I felt, I intended to jump off that plane in the middle of the sky. Nothing could stop me. I believed I could do anything if I could do this terrifying thing. And I did.
I skydived out of my comfort zone. Now, it’s your turn.
Not literally. You don’t need to skydive to exit your comfort zone, but you must leave your comfort zone to be happy. However, you might argue that comfort zones exist to make us happy already.
The answer is no. Comfort zones keep us safe, not happy. But don’t get me wrong. Comfort zones are a good thing to have when you need to retreat and regroup your thoughts. Think of it as a recovery center for your mind and body. I’m not saying you must challenge yourself to exit your comfort zone every time. I love my comfort zone as much as the next person, especially when it means I didn’t enjoy a specific challenge. Nonetheless, you can’t stay in your comfort zone forever.
To grow, you must leave your comfort zone just as a bird leaves its nest to fly. Challenge yourself. Explore new things. The world goes far and wide for a reason. Once I have my break in my comfort zone, I think about what to do next to improve. The answer isn’t always clear, but it is always apparent that it involves exiting my comfort zone.
If you want to discover what makes you happy, you are likelier to find it outside your comfort zone. I didn’t know I enjoyed writing to an audience until I decided to share my thoughts on happiness habits through social media. Then that led to writing a newsletter addressed to you. It’s funny how things work when you exit your comfort zone.
Can you think of something that would make you exit your comfort zone?
